Specially created for Possession Obsession, Patrizio Di Massimo’s cookie jars are hand-crafted in London and each uniquely painted by the artist, who is renown for his larger figurative canvases. Emerging through an intuitive yet rigorous process, Di Massimo’s imagery blends art historical references with more personal narratives of hedonism, mystery, family life and spirituality. In these new works – titled A Cookie for You, The Sweetest Cookie, and I Am Your Cookie –, the artist reflects on the paradoxical nature of cookie jars as objects that may embody innocence and desire at once. He takes inspiration from the shapes of popular Italian biscuits – such as abbracci (“hugs”) and pan di stelle (“bread of stars”) – and combines them with surreal celestial creatures, whose half-cookie-half-human bodies appear engaged in a group performance that turns each jar into a small theatrical set.
